“La Valse,” Choreographic Poem for Orchestra
The 4th Philharmonic Concert brings a reunion with the magnificent violinist Alexandra Tirsu, who stepped in at short notice as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in 2023. This time, the charming Moldovan violinist will be able to demonstrate her musicality and technical brilliance in Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Ravel’s Rhapsody “Tzigane.” Maurice Ravel's choreographic poem "La Valse" was originally conceived as a symphonic poem in honor of Vienna, as a "kind of homage to the great Strauss (not Richard, but the other one, Johann)." However, it was only many years later, after the end of World War I, that the Frenchman revived the idea. "La Valse" now became a metaphor for the end of the Belle Époque. As Sergei Prokofiev confessed, he had developed a "taste for the scores of Haydn and Mozart" through his teacher Nikolai Tcherepnin. And so, "the plan arose to write a symphony in the style of Haydn." His First Symphony, the so-called "Classical Symphony," also became his most popular.
